Biography
Jonathan attended The Boston Conservatory of Music while in High School and graduated from The University of Michigan with concentrations in Music, Philosophy and Religion. He studied film and television directing and acting at the University of California, Los Angeles Extension Program, from original Group Theater member Don Richardson. Jonathan’s lead acting debut, Thank You For Not Smoking, was an official entry in the 1997 Sundance Film Festival.
While in New York, Jonathan worked on Wall Street at Solomon Brothers Asset Management in Institutional Sales while financing and developing Off-Broadway theatre. He moved to Broadway at The Nederlander Producing Company of America where he handled all development and line producing for CEO Jimmy Nederlander, Jr. The Nederlander Organization at the time was the largest privately owned live entertainment producing and presenting company in the world, owning nine Broadway theaters, thirty-four concert venues nationally, and many other theaters worldwide.
Jonathan produced documentary films profiling Broadway icons Geoffery Holder, Lea DeLaria, Liliane Montevecchi and Julie Wilson. Filmed at Joe’s Pub at The Public Theater, the docs were presented at film festivals around the world.
In Los Angeles, Jonathan worked for Sony Pictures’ domestic television research department analyzing all network and cable programs, tracking over twenty-six series, specials, and MOWs. He then transferred into feature film marketing full time while remaining a part time consultant for Sony’s International Television department. The genre film team released such movies as Closer (dir. Mike Nichols), Adaptation (dir. Spike Jonze), Big Fish (dir. Tim Burton), Boogeyman (#1 at the box office), Underworld (#1 at the box office), In The Cut (dir. Jane Campion), You Got Served (#1 at the box office), the Resident Evil franchise, and Exorcism of Emily Rose. Due to the department’s success, Sony re-launched the TriStar Pictures banner producing and marketing such films as Lords of Dogtown (dir. Catherine Hardwicke), Oliver Twist (dir. Roman Polanski), Running With Scissors (based on the New York Times Best Seller) and Silent Hill (based on the video game by Kunami). As Marketing Manager, Jonathan worked on fifty major theatrical releases in five years, of which ten films achieved #1 at the box-office status. He is credited as Co-Producer of the documentaries Fang vs. Fiction (airing on AMC), The Real Exorcist (A & E), and Real Premonitions (A & E) while also having developed the feature Silent Hill.
In 2007 Jonathan composed and directed the 35mm short entitled Naked: A Guy’s Musical, now available on iTunes. He is currently developing a feature musical entitled Private Sky.
Jonathan teaches feature film and entertainment economics at Carnegie Mellon’s Master of Entertainment Industry Management program and the GIOCA graduate program at the University of Bologna, Italy. He also teaches vocal performance privately.
