A Heinz College student with a federal work study award is able to be employed under the Federal Work Study (FWS) program, but is restricted to employment within the Heinz College. FWS position eligibility is determined by the Heinz College Director of Financial Aid. Heinz College pays 60% of the student’s eligible work study wages. The remaining 40% of the student’s eligible wages is subsidized by the federal government. A federal work study eligible job can only be filled by a federal work study eligible student.
HIRING SUPERVISOR PROCESS:
1. Submit a job request form to Lanae Meyer, Financial Aid Coordinator, Heinz College Office of Admissions and Financial Aid. A job description does not need to accompany your request if it is one of the Standard Heinz College Federal Work Study Job Descriptions (see below). Any job that falls outside those job descriptions must be approved by Heinz College Director of Financial Aid in advance of the position posting. The Office of Financial Aid posts your position to Career Navigator, Heinz College student employment system. Your contact information is listed with the position when the job is posted.
2. Interview and hire the student(s) with a work study award. Note: Only a student with a work study award can be hired for a federal work study eligible position.
3. Complete the “Hiring Supervisor Section” of the Student Information Form (the student completes the Student Section) and the student submits the form to Heinz College Office of Financial Aid. The following chart provides a breakdown of the cost and identifies the budget that will be charged.
4. Monitor student’s work hours and sign biweekly time cards.

HEINZ COLLEGE FEDERAL WORK STUDY STANDARD JOB DESCRIPTIONS:
Office Assistant:
Office Assistants work within one of the Heinz College administrative offices that provide direct or indirect services to students. Duties may include but are not necessarily limited to photocopying, proofreading, filing, tracking documents, faxing, handling phone inquiries, making on-campus deliveries, assisting with mailings, performing data entry, assisting in development of presentations, developing spreadsheets and other documents, opening mail, and assisting with office projects. Students must be proficient in Microsoft Office, be dependable, have the ability to follow directions and possess good interpersonal skills.
Research Assistant:
Research Assistants work with Heinz College faculty members on various projects in the hiring faculty member’s area of expertise. Research Assistants may assist faculty with developing curriculum, identifying and obtaining source material and data, exploring current trends, interacting with individuals in private industry, government, and/or non-profit organizations, organizing materials, gathering and analyzing data, creating, drafting and editing documents, preparing bibliographies and summaries, etc. Students must be organized, detail-oriented and have the ability to perform statistical analysis. Position may require specific computer or statistical software proficiency.
Technical Assistant:
Technical Assistants provide support related to hardware and software. Technical Assistants communicate via phone, email and in person to local network or system users and students. Duties related to hardware and software may include such things as troubleshooting hardware and software problems, repairing equipment, setting up and configuring PCs and laptops, and resolving a variety of computer problems. Technical Assistants must have good interpersonal and computer troubleshooting skills, be organized and dependable, be able to bend, stretch and navigate small spaces such as under desks and behind furniture and lift equipment (monitors, computers, printers, etc).
Web Assistant:
Web Assistants provide support within Heinz College by adding functionality to or updating websites. Position requires content management system experience and experience with ASP, JSP, Java, MS Access, Oracle, DB Design, HTML, VBScript and JavaScript. Web Assistants must be dependable and have strong organizational and problem solving skills.
