CIO Institute
Carnegie Mellon University's CIO Institute delivers excellence in executive education for today’s leaders in business-technology. The CIO Institute is specifically focused on helping IT leaders better align people, processes, and technology for organizational effectiveness through our flagship program, the Chief Information Officer Certificate. The CIO Institute can also develop customized programs to fit your organization’s specific training needs.
We offer two program options:
- Our Federal CIO Certificate program includes eight courses that can be completed in as little as one year by attending weekday sessions at our Arlington, VA facility.
- With the Certificate-to-Degree option, once you complete at least five CIO Certificate courses, you may continue your studies toward a Master of Science in Information Technology (MSIT). The MSIT program is a part-time masters program that is delivered to you via distance, allowing you to retain your current employment.

The CIO Certificate is issued by the U.S. General Services Administration's (GSA) CIO University. The CIO University promotes academic education and collaboration, via graduate-level programs, through a virtual consortium of six universities to address Chief Information Officer core competency requirements for organizations and individuals.
The program focuses on twelve subject areas directly related to competencies identified by the Federal CIO Council in compliance with the Clinger Cohen Act of 1996:

Master of Science in Information Technology (Distance)
The Master of Science in Information Technology (MSIT) program is designed specifically for working IT professionals who seek a world-class master’s degree without having to leave the workforce or relocate. By selecting one of two curriculum tracks (information technology management or information security and assurance), you can focus on your specific area of interest.
Our distance education program has been successfully delivering quality IT management education since 2001. You’ll receive the same diploma and the same high-caliber education from expert faculty as our on-campus students.
