Posse Foundation

Carnegie Mellon University’s H. John Heinz III College, in partnership with the Posse Foundation, is pleased to announce the creation of the Heinz College- Posse Foundation Scholarship Fund.

Heinz College will offer a scholarship to Posse members who have completed their bachelor’s degree and want to pursue a graduate degree at Heinz College. The Heinz College-Posse Foundation Scholarship fund will provide a minimum of $6,000 per semester (some students will receive more) while enrolled in a full-time master’s program (listed below). In addition, each year one Posse Scholar enrolling in the Master of Science in Public Policy and Management program will be awarded a full-tuition scholarship.

The scholarship has been established as part of Heinz College’s commitment to promoting innovative decision-making and diverse perspectives in leadership across the public, non-profit and private sectors.

Posse is one of the most comprehensive and renowned college access and youth leadership development programs in the United States. Founded in 1989, Posse identifies public high school students with extraordinary academic and leadership potential who may be overlooked by traditional college selection processes. Posse extends to these students the opportunity to pursue personal and academic excellence by placing them in supportive, multicultural teams—Posses—of 10 students. Posse partner colleges and universities award Posse Scholars four-year, full-tuition leadership scholarships.

Eligibility
The program is designed for Posse Scholars who are interested in pursuing a master’s degree at the Heinz College.

Prerequisites
The Heinz College’s MISM program requires at least one college-level programming course prior to enrollment. Heinz College’s other programs do not have formal prerequisites for admission. However, because the curriculum is highly quantitative, students should take at least one college-level in statistics, economics and in pre-calculus. Students who have not taken this coursework may be required to attend a summer program at the Heinz College for four weeks prior to the start of their program. There is no tuition for the summer program. We would encourage students to take these courses during their undergraduate studies.

Admissions Requirements
Current and previous Posse Scholars are eligible to apply during their senior year for admission to the Heinz College for the following fall semester. To apply, prospective students must take the GRE (or GMAT), complete an application form, and submit transcripts from all universities attended, three letters of recommendation, a statement of purpose and a resume. Students can apply on-line for free. Students are granted admission on the basis of academic achievement, performance on the GRE, experience in the proposed field of study, leadership experience, fit of their goals with the program, and recommendations that indicate they are capable of excelling in a rigorous master’s program. No single factor guarantees or prevents admission; all factors are weighed in the process.
