MISM Accelerated Masters - Carnegie Mellon University

Heinz College offers an Accelerated Master’s Program to qualified Carnegie Mellon University undergraduate students. The program—structured as three years at Carnegie Mellon followed by three semesters at Heinz—results in students receiving both a bachelor’s and master’s degree in less time than is normally required.

Who's Eligible?

Students with a strong academic background who have most of their undergraduate requirements completed are eligible to apply to the accelerated masters program. . Note: The MISM program holds a luncheon each year for Carnegie Mellon undergrads interested in learning more about the accelerated masters program. We can also easily put you in contact with current and past AMP students.

Application Requirements

The application deadline is January 10. The application form must be submitted via the online application system by the deadline. Supporting materials sent by mail (if any) must be postmarked by the deadline. Our admissions committee cannot begin reviewing your application until we have received all of your application materials. If space remains in the class after the deadline we will continue to accept applications. Scholarship opportunities after the deadline are limited.

To apply, students must:

  • Take the GRE (or GMAT).
  • Fill out an application form (including resume/CV) and the Undergraduate Course Requirements form with advisor’s signature.
  • Write an essay describing why you want to enroll in the MISM program and how it will assist in achieving your future career goals.
  • Supply an official Carnegie Mellon transcript, along with transcripts from all colleges and universities attended.
  • Provide three letters of recommendation, including two or three from CMU faculty; one of the letters may be from a professional contact – i.e. internship supervisor, hourly position supervisor.
  • Complete an interview (Contact the admissions office to schedule.)

Degree Requirements

  • 180 units are required to complete the MISM program.
  • A maximum of 24 units of relevant undergraduate coursework taken while enrolled in the MISM program with a grade of B or higher can be transferred and counted toward the 180 units. Some MISM courses may fulfill undergraduate requirements. You should discuss this with your undergraduate advisor.
  • Successful completion of an approved summer internship after graduating with a bachelor’s degree.
  • At least one college level programming course is required prior to applying.
  • Work experience and completed bachelor’s degree requirement are waived for students applying under this agreement.

Financial Aid

  • Undergraduate students do not qualify for MISM financial aid.
  • Students beginning in the fall are eligible for MISM financial aid in the final semester of the program (after completing a bachelor’s degree).
