The HCPM program provides students with a world class education that enables them to pursue and succeed in diverse careers in the health sector. We differentiate ourselves from schools of public health and healthcare administration by offering our students a unique set of highly marketable and transferable skills that are in demand from a wide range of employers including consulting firms, government agencies and organizations, hospitals and health clinics, and nongovernment organizations. Our graduates can be found around the world working for organizations such as the Singapore Ministry of Health, Korean Medical Association, U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, MAXIMUS, Deloitte, Mayo Clinic, and the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC).

Who Really Pays? Heinz College Researchers Examine the Rising Cost of Health Care

With healthcare a major issue facing the Obama administration, researchers at Carnegie Mellon University’s H. John Heinz III College are providing insights into the impact of its consolidation.

In their research, Heinz College economics professor Martin Gaynor and former Heinz College professor William Vogt, now a Senior Economist with the RAND Corporation, went beyond the long-held beliefs about value of competition. Using hospital industry data from California, they simulated a for-profit merger and a not-for-profit merger to determine the effects each would have on overall costs.

Real-World Challenges: HCPM Students Help Design Hospital Space

HCPM students recently worked on a project that focused on the utilization of common areas on the 6th floor of the new Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh with the specific aim of creating a "town square" atmosphere within this space. This area includes a large outdoor healing garden with breathtaking views of the city, an adjacent four story atrium and nearby library, a business center and a lounge. Ideally, the hospital would like this area to be the central meeting place for families, staff, support groups, and visitors.

Students worked with key personnel at the hospital to research the types of functions for these spaces, establish goals and objectives, gather relevant information, identify strategies, determine quantitative requirements and summarize recommendations for the program
