MPM Concentrations

Another unique aspect of our MPM program is that you can design your own concentration in consultation with your advisor or pursue a pre-designed concentration.

Pre-Defined Concentrations

Many students find that their interests fit well within one of our defined concentration areas which include:

Self-Defined Concentrations

If your interests lie in a specific policy area, you may wish to define your own concentration and choose electives from any graduate-level courses offered at Heinz College or elsewhere on campus.

MPM Core Course Requirements

As a student in the MPM program, you must complete the following core courses, regardless of your area of concentration:

  • Organizational Management: Theory and Practice
  • Data Analysis for Managers
  • Information Systems for Managers
  • Economic Principles of Policy Analysis
  • Financial Analysis for Managers
  • Professional Writing *
  • Professional Speaking *

Electives

The remaining units can be completed with electives from any graduate-level courses offered at Heinz College or elsewhere on campus (subject to academic advisor approval). Electives can be chosen to satisfy the requirements of a pre-defined concentration or to complete a self-defined concentration designed in conjunction with an academic advisor.

Course Exemptions

You can only earn an exemption by documenting your expertise in any of the required core or concentration courses. Typically, appropriate documentation includes copies of the related course descriptions, class syllabi and a letter of explanation from the student. A faculty committee rules on exemptions and has the final decision. Exempting a course doesn't reduce the required number of courses you must complete. However, you can add more elective courses to expand your knowledge base. Exemption requests will not be accepted during the semester you are planning to graduate.
