MSPPM with CIDE - Mexico

Please note the following:

  1. Students are limited to one semester at the host campus. The maximum number of units that can be counted towards their Heinz College degree from that one semester is 60.

  2. U.S. students who are otherwise eligible may apply for federal aid for courses that are accepted as credits earned towards their Heinz College degree. A financial aid “Consortium Agreement” must be completed for each individual U.S. student participating in the exchange program.

This exchange opportunity is available through our partner, CIDE (Centro de Investigación y Docencia Económicas). This partnership allows students from each institution to study at the other school for one semester. CIDE students should contact their program director for further details.

MSPPM students have the opportunity to study at CIDE during the fall of their second year. You can continue your work toward your MSPPM degree while augmenting your studies with classes and experiences unique to studying abroad.

Interested students must be:

  • In good academic standing with Heinz College.
  • Fluent in Spanish (courses taught in Spanish).
  • Able to complete specific MSPPM requirements in your fourth semester (Advanced Policy, Advanced Methods, Capstone & Systems).
  • Able to complete one full semester at CIDE (approximately mid-August through mid-December).

Coursework

The semester at CIDE is organized as follows:

1) 1-2 compulsory courses from the Public Administration Division. Last yea r they included:

  • Research Seminar I: The objective is to develop a first research draft (of 80-100 pages) for the paper students must submit as requirement for completion of the program (tesina).
  • Ethics and Public Policy: This course explores different theoretical conceptions of ethics and focuses on its interpretation from the perspective of public service, and public servants.

2) You can choose two optional courses from a menu CIDE defines by selecting courses they consider adequate for the Masters' profile. These are advanced courses from other CIDE programs (Law, Political Science and International Relations, and Economics). Last year some of them were: Distributive Justice; Political Economy of the Mexican Political System; Mexican Political System; Politics and Fiction (political analysis using references from the Literature); International Political Economy.

Please note: The Research Seminar is compulsory only for CIDE students. If the Research Seminar is one of the compulsory courses, an exchange student could select three optional courses instead . If selected, you will need to review your course choices with the MSPPM director prior to the start of the CIDE semester, in order to make sure that they will count toward your degree.
