APPLYING FOR US FEDERAL AID
If your HOME school is Heinz Pittsburgh, use federal code E00073 when filing the FAFSA.
If your HOME school is Heinz Adelaide, use federal code 003242 when filing the FAFSA.
The Heinz College Financial Aid Application is the same for both the Pittsburgh and the Adelaide campuses. Contact hzfinaid@andrew.cmu.edu with questions. Additional information is available on the exchange program websites .
SCHOLARSHIPS
Heinz College Scholarships are renewable for the semester spent at another campus.
FEDERAL WORK STUDY
Federal work study is offered only to eligible Heinz Pittsburgh students; there are no federal work study jobs available at the Australia campus. Federal work study cannot be used while studying in Australia. Eligible exchange students coming to Pittsburgh who are receiving US federal financial aid may be eligible to receive a federal work study award. Work study jobs allow students to work and earn money to help cover education costs. Positions include administrative positions, research assistantships, teaching assistantships, and community service positions. Eligible students are advised of available positions at the start of the exchange semester. Students generally earn between $8.50 and $12 per hour for hours worked and receive biweekly pay checks.
US FEDERAL LOANS
Eligible students may borrow US federal loans to fund allowable education-related costs for studying abroad. The amount of loan eligibility varies between campuses due to the differences in living costs between Pittsburgh and Adelaide. Loan eligibility is based on allowable cost of attendance items including tuition, fees, books, health insurance, room and board, transportation, miscellaneous, and dependent child care expenses. Information about the federal loan programs available to students as well as the costs of attendance used as a basis for determining US federal aid eligibility are posted on the Heinz website for both Pittsburgh and Adelaide.
BILLING AND LOAN DISBURSEMENT
When you receive an invoice from Carnegie Mellon University or when you view your student account through Student Information Online (SIO-available by logging into https://webiso.andrew.cmu.edu/login.cgi using your Andrew ID and password), you may find that your loan amount does not show as a credit on your student account. This is because loan disbursements do not appear on the student account until the loan funds actually disburse to the University. If your funds arrive via electronic funds transfer (EFT), your loans credit directly to your student account, generally during the first week or so of classes. Loan disbursements are disbursed by the lenders in US dollars. When the borrower’s home school is Adelaide, the loan disbursements are converted to Australian dollars by the University when posting to the student account using the actual currency conversion rate that is in effect at the time of posting to the student account. This is because student account charges and credits for Heinz Australia students are calculated in Australian dollars. When the borrower’s home school is Pittsburgh, there is no currency conversion on loan disbursements.
Timing of Loan Disbursements
Loans covering two semesters are disbursed in two equal payments, one at the beginning of each semester of enrollment for which the loan is intended or shortly after loan certification if the loan is certified after the start of the semester for which the loan is intended. Applicable loan fees are deducted before disbursement to the student account. Carnegie Mellon is set up to accept electronic funds transfer (EFT) disbursements from many, but not all lenders. If your lender is not set up to disburse via EFT with Carnegie Mellon, paper checks are mailed to the HUB at the Pittsburgh campus and the Heinz Pittsburgh Financial Aid Office subsequently contacts the student to make arrangements for getting the loan checks endorsed by the student before posting to the student account. If you have questions about whether Carnegie Mellon receives EFT disbursements from your lender, please email hzfinaid@andrew.cmu.edu.
STUDENT ACCOUNT REFUNDS
The Heinz Pittsburgh Financial Aid Office orders student account refunds via wire transfer for US federal loan borrowers in the Pittsburgh/Adelaide exchange program regardless of home campus. Please direct questionsto hzfinaid@andrew.cmu.edu. Student account refunds generally are available at the start of the semester for students with credit balances.
Home School Pittsburgh Refunds
Refunds for Heinz Pittsburgh students studying at the Adelaide campus are paid only in US dollars through e-refund. Students must sign up for e-refund through Student Information Online (SIO). See https://webiso.andrew.cmu.edu/login.cgi.
Home School Adelaide Refunds
Refunds are processed only in Australian dollars when the home school is Adelaide. Students must complete and submit a Wire Transfer Request Form, which takes several days to process through the Enrollment Services and International Finance Offices before the refund is disbursed via wire transfer. Contact hzfinaid@andrew.cmu.eduto request a Wire Transfer Request Form.
All Other Students
Non-US students whose home school is Heinz Adelaide should contact the Heinz Adelaide Program Director regarding student account refunds.
Non-US students whose home school is Heinz Pittsburgh should contact the Heinz Pittsburgh Financial Aid Office regarding student account refunds by emailing hzfinaid@andrew.cmu.edu
TUITION AND FEES
Tuition is charged on either a flat rate basis or a per unit basis, depending on the home school. When Heinz Pittsburgh is the home school, tuition is charged as a flat rate for enrollment of 36 or more units and on a per unit rate for enrollment of less than 36 units. When Heinz Adelaide is the home school, tuition is charged on a per unit basis regardless of the number of enrolled units. If a student withdraws from all his/her classes before the 60% point in the semester, they are entitled to a prorated refund of tuition (as well as a proration of the scholarship, if any). If a student withdraws from all his/her classes on or after the 60% point, no tuition refund is received.
Fees (including the PAT bus fee, the technology fee, and the activities fee) are charged on a per semester basis, excluding the May semester, at the Pittsburgh campus. When Pittsburgh students are enrolled in their exchange semester (when they are in Adelaide) they do not pay the PAT bus or activities fees. Adelaide students coming to Pittsburgh on exchange will be assessed all Pittsburgh Fees.
All students are responsible for their own travel and cost of living expenses associated with the exchange program.
