Once You Arrive at the Host Campus

A driver will meet arriving students at the Adelaide airport and take them to their accommodation (temporary or permanent as per prior arrangement).   Students who make private arrangements should advise the Graduate Program Coordinator of the landlord’s/friend’s contact details. In the event of your flight being delayed while you are in transit this will enable her to liaise with them to ensure that someone is at the residence when you arrive.

Students are asked, where possible, to time their arrival so that it occurs during business hours.   This will enable the CMU staff member to provide you with a good orientation of the city and you will be able to buy food and other essential items while the shops are open.

Settling In Guide

The travel time to Adelaide can take almost 24 hours. To enable yourself to adjust to the different time zone and climate it is highly recommend that you arrive a few days before the start of orientation to allow yourself to recover from jet lag. Use the first few days to settle into your new home, to familiarise yourself with the location of shops, public transport options, and other places of interest to you. You may like to wait until Orientation to sort out matters concerning mobile phones and computers.  If you possess a student card you should be able to purchase bus or train tickets at concession rates. Carry your student ID card with you at all times on public transport to avoid the possibility of being fined for travelling on a concession ticket without proof of being a student. (There is no provision made for students to present their student ID at a later time to have the fine waived.)

Photo ID Cards:
Student photos must be sent electronically prior to arrival to Lourdes Almeda, the Program and Faculty Administrator. Her email address is: lalmeda@andrew.cmu.edu. ID Cards will be ordered and generated from our external supplier. It takes one working week for this process to occur so it is recommended that students send their photos as soon as possible to avoid delay. Students cannot access public transport concession rates (approximately 50% discount) without a valid ID card.

First Day of Orientation:
Orientation program is scheduled for the week prior to the start of the semester (dates included in offer letter)

Students are advised that attendance at the Orientation Session is compulsory. The individual presentations are specifically designed to enable you to orientate yourself to the University, to be introduced to the services available, and to understand your rights and responsibilities while studying at this campus as quickly as possible so that you can make the most of your time in Adelaide.

Buying Books:
Similar to the information provided above for students travelling to Pittsburgh, purchasing textbooks prior to arrival is not recommended for a number of reasons. First, faculty can change the edition of the textbook they use at the last minute requiring you to purchase a new book once you arrive. Second, we sometimes have different faculty members teaching different sections of the same course. They do not always use the same text.   Third, of a more practical nature is that books weigh a lot and it is better if you use your luggage allocation weight to pack clothes and other personal items that you will need during your stay.   Also, in the unlikely event of your luggage being lost or damaged you will not face the further inconvenience and expense of having to replace the books.

Student Email Account and Computer Access:
As you are already a student of Carnegie Mellon University your email account will not change. Once you arrive in Adelaide a local network account will be set up for you so that you are able to access the Blackboard.
