When writing about Heinz College for print or the web, use “the Heinz College of Information Systems and Public Policy” on first reference. In subsequent references, use “Heinz College.”
When referencing the college, use the definite article (the) only on first reference. Never use the definite article on subsequent references.
The college’s complete name, H. John Heinz III College, should be reserved for official business and legal documentation. For letterhead and titles, use "Heinz College of Information Systems and Public Policy."
Distinguishing Heinz College’s graduate schools from each other in writing is not preferred, and should be avoided. However, if it is necessary to refer to one of the graduate schools with specificity, use:
- Heinz College’s School of Public Policy and Management
- Heinz College’s School of Information Systems and Management
When referring to the MAM or MEIM programs, use the following on first reference, as appropriate:
MAM:
- Heinz College’s Master of Arts Management (MAM), a joint program with the College of Fine Arts, or:
- The Master of Arts Management (MAM), a joint partnership of Carnegie Mellon University’s Heinz College and College of Fine Arts
MEIM:
- Heinz College’s Master of Entertainment Industry Management (MEIM), a joint program with the College of Fine Arts, or:
- The Master of Entertainment Industry Management (MEIM), a joint program of Carnegie Mellon University’s Heinz College and College of Fine Arts
Per the CMU Style Guide:
For external documents, include Carnegie Mellon University in first reference of any college or school. It is the preferred style to write “Carnegie Mellon University’s Heinz College of Information Systems and Public Policy” on first reference. For second references, using only the school, college or department name is acceptable.
When writing, the first time you refer to the university—whether in print or on the web—use “Carnegie Mellon University.” In all subsequent references, use either “Carnegie Mellon” or “CMU.” Neither Carnegie Mellon nor CMU should be used on first reference.
