Heinz College is home to two part-time programs designed for the working professional: our Master of Public Management (MPM) degree, an in-person program bringing CMU’s world-class training in data, technology and management to professionals right here in Western Pennsylvania. For those seeking unmatched IT skills as well as innovative management and strategic tools, our virtual, asynchronous Master of Science in Information Technology (MSIT) program allows you to upgrade your data analytics, cybersecurity, IT, and management skills from anywhere in the world.

The virtual, asynchronous delivery model of our MSIT program pairs the flexibility of distance learning with the same access to world-class faculty enjoyed by our on-campus students. Master of public management
An in-person program for those looking to make an impact in western pennsylvania
The MPM program is designed for professionals who want to strengthen their skills while continuing to work. With part-time, in-person evening classes and flexible pacing options, the MPM program makes it possible to pursue a graduate degree without stepping away from your career or family responsibilities.
This program is built for people with three or more years of professional experience who want to deepen their understanding of management, technology, and policy in the public and nonprofit sectors. The curriculum emphasizes practical tools and critical thinking that you can bring back to your workplace right away. Whether you’re working in local government, nonprofit organizations, or other public-serving roles, MPM helps you become more effective in your approach to solving problems.
The MPM program has three tracks, allowing you to select the pace that fits you:
- Accelerated: 15 months (with transfer credit)
- Standard: 20 months
- Extended: 24 months
All tracks are available for Fall, Spring or Summer starts.

How to apply
At Carnegie Mellon University and Heinz College, we are committed to removing barriers. We do not charge an application fee.
The MPM and MSIT programs offer three deadlines throughout the year.
- To begin classes during the fall semester in late August, apply by June 1.
- To begin classes during the spring semester in early January, apply by November 1.
- To begin classes during the summer semester in mid-May, apply by March 1.
