IT Lab: Summer Security Intensive (SSI)

We have a short survey for you to complete that will help us to prepare for your arrival on campus. This will also ensure we have the appropriate mailing address for sending your stipend in early June.

Please complete and return the AP Supplier Electronic Funds (EFT) Form by May 15th. This form is required for us to process and mail your stipend. A delay in returning this form will delay your stipend payment.

IT Lab SSI participants are required to complete a Tuberculosis (TB) Country of Origin Screening Form, which is required of all students participating in CMU sponsored events, as well as for participants of those events who will live in campus housing.

Please send a recent headshot and write a short biography (details below).

Save the headshot as a .JPG or .JPEG file. Save the short biography in a Word document and name the document (Your Last Name, Your First Initial). Please email the headshot and biography to Brittany Foster (brittanf@andrew.cmu.edu) with the SUBJECT Line (Your Last Name, Your First Name) no later than the deadline - May 15th.

Your biography, headshot, and information within will be shared with IT Lab faculty, TAs, staff and your fellow classmates. Biographies may be posted to CMU and Heinz College marketing networks, such as Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. We will also share this information with our graduate school admissions office interested in recruiting IT Lab Fellows for graduate study, and with prospective donors and corporate sponsors.

Your biography should include your name, university, major, and area of interest – information systems or information security. It should also include a short description of your past achievements and future goals. Please limit the description to 100 words. Please use “spell check,” correct grammar and punctuation. Here’s an example of what we’re looking for:

Required Dates for arrival and departure of the IT Lab: SSI Program

ARRIVE: Thursday, June 13, 2024 check-in to room after 3 p.m.

DEPART: Saturday, August 3, 2024 check-out of room by 12 noon

These exact dates are required. Exceptions are offered on a very limited basis and only when exceptional circumstances beyond your control will prevent you from arriving on time. If you wish to discuss your arrival or departure date, contact Brittany Foster as soon as possible.

To book your flight, please provide Brittany Foster with the following information:

• Your departure/return airport
• Title (Mr, Mrs, Ms, or Miss)
• Name exactly as it appears on government issued identification
• Gender (required by airline)

If you plan to drive and keep your car on campus during the program, please notify Brittany Foster immediately as we will need to make special arrangements for a parking pass.

Prior to the start of the program, You will receive an email entitled “Action Required: Your Andrew userID Has Been Created” from it-help@cmu.edu. The email will provide instructions on how to receive your Andrew userID, set a password, and enroll in two-factor authentication (2fa) with DUO, Carnegie Mellon’s multi-factor authentication service provider. Please be sure to check your spam folder, in the event the email does not appear in your inbox.

Please expect to receive your Andrew ID between May 1 and May 20, 2024.

Your "Andrew ID" is REQUIRED in order to login to university services such as SIO, Canvas, and HealthConnect.

Deadline to Complete: Within 5 days of receiving the "Action Required" email

You must submit your photo for the student information system and ID Card as soon as you receive your Andrew ID (your Andrew ID is required to complete the online photo submission). 

Submit your Photo online through the Photo Submission Application. You will be able to crop the photo online to see exactly what the end result will be. The photo you submit will be the photo used on your CMU ID Card (distributed to students upon check-in).

Carnegie Mellon is pleased to offer a tool in Student Information Online (SIO) that gives students the ability to record the preferred pronunciation of their name, as well as provide the phonetic spelling. Through NameCoach, the recorded name and phonetic spelling is then made available for faculty, advisors and others, removing the guessing game of how to correctly pronounce student names.

Students need to activate their Andrew ID before they can access SIO and complete this step.

Our school is committed to helping students maximize their learning in all of their courses during IT Lab.

IT Lab Fellows may submit an application for accommodations as soon as they receive their Andrew ID and password (see below). For your convenience, the Office of Disability Resources' staff are happy to meet with students by phone to discuss setting up accommodations prior to your arrival on campus.

Obtain accommodations prior to the start of the program by following the steps outlined on this site.  Select “non-degree student” on your  application.  Please start the process to obtain academic and housing accommodations 30 days prior to check-in.

Your attire during the program will vary based on the activities happening. Please be prepared to bring the following attire:

Classroom

• Classes will be held Monday - Friday. On these days, please dress suitably and comfortably for a classroom setting

Speaker Series

• We take time to plan an IT Lab Speaker Series that is both social and engaging. These sessions may warrant business attire. Please be prepared for such outfit if the need arises

Client Presentations

• IT Lab fellows collaborate with a real-world client (from the local government or non-profit sectors) on a cybersecurity-related project. These projects include a presentation, which may warrant business attire.

All IT Lab Fellows are required to have a laptop. Read our laptop requirement guidelines for more information. Mac users, please read the Mac OSX section in the guideline.

PLEASE NOTE: We cannot guarantee support from Heinz Computing Services if you do not have a laptop that meets the outlined requirements. If you believe you'll need to utilize computing support during the duration of the program, we suggest purchasing a laptop that meets our requirements. Any purchase of a laptop would be made on your own terms and does not fall under the IT Lab benefits.
